Our scientific research
Our group aims to deepen knowledge about mirror neurons and to research practical applications of discoveries about these peculiar neurons in the medical and psychological fields.
The first step was to try to prove that the theoretical model underlying the Self Mirroring Therapy method, which is based on the theory of embodied simulation, had solid and verifiable foundations. Along these lines is the article recently published by Frontiers in Psychology, on the effect of seeing one's own emotional face on our facial muscles, comparing it with seeing other faces showing the same emotion. The study was conducted on a sample of Psychology students from the University of Milan Bicocca and showed that there is indeed a different activation of the facial muscles corresponding to the emotion represented on the screen when subjects saw their own face compared to when they saw another person's face. These results confirm, even if there was no real need, that embodied simulation actually exists and that it can therefore be exploited at a psychotherapeutic level to show the patient the emotions painted on their face and thus help them to recognize them.
