Piergiuseppe Vinai and Maurizio Speciale conceived SMT in 2008 and presented the first work on the subject at the SITCC congress in Milan in 2010. The name of the method at that time was video-enhanced CBT, but they soon changed the name to highlight the fact that it was not solely linked to CBT but also applicable to other psychotherapy models.
